Home Sweet Home
Nursery Spring Term
During the Spring Term 2022, Nursery children have been exploring the topic "Home Sweet Home."
We held an immersion day, whereby the children had the opportunity to play with lots of house themed toys and games, whilst also using different materials to make house shapes. Nursery loved exploring, in particular, the shaving foam and paint to draw a house, whilst also using cooking ingredients to make house shaped sandwiches. Children were encouraged to talk about where they live, and bring in photographs of their own houses and families. We have been learning about living in St Athan, Wales, and have also linked St Dwynwen's Day to loving our families.
We also asked the children to think about what type of house they would like to make in Nursery, and how they would like to make it. The children came up with lots of ideas, and we have been busy including these in our follow-up planning for the topic, for eg, some children wanted to paint, draw or colour a particular type of house, whilst others wanted to cut and stick, or use bricks, boxes, sticks, stones, ICT, or cooking ingredients to make their chosen house.
We have been looking at different habitats, and have been using the Number Puppy story books in particular to look at houses, kennels, bird houses, and other creature homes linked to the stories, whilst also developing early number, colour and shape skills.
We have been using real life, authentic settings, by exploring Woodland Wonders for creature habitats, and we will extend this further, when we walk into the village to look at different types of buildings. This will also include a visit to the library, where we will listen to a home-themed story. We will, of course, be reinforcing that we live in Wales, when we celebrate St David's Day.
Nursery intends to celebrate their "Home Sweet Home" topic with a display of the model houses that they make, and possibly some songs to sing for parents!
